The Geology major is a traditional curriculum focusing on study of rocks and minerals, petrologic relationships, rock-forming processes, and field methods in the earth sciences. Total major requires 38 credit hours in GEOS courses, plus approximately 33 credit hours in supporting science courses.  These cognate credits constitute the Group Science Minor for Geology students.

Notes:
It is recommended that students begin their math, physics, and chemistry courses as soon as possible in their college careers. There is also a College of Arts and Sciences language requirement that you should be addressing early in your college career.

A summer field course in Geology is strongly recommended. This course is generally taken after the junior year in the western U.S. and six to eight hours of academic credit can be transferred to Western Michigan University and be used as part of the 122 total credit hour graduation requirement.

Transfer students should consult with the College of Arts & Sciences advisor (Room 2060 Friedman Hall) about general education requirements and transfer credit.

All major and minor courses must be passed with at least a "C".  Cognate courses may be passed with a "C" average in all cognates.

Questions concerning course schedules, possible course substitutions, geology minors, group science minors and other aspects of the geology curriculum should be addressed to the geology advisor.

* The Physics 2050 - 2080 sequence (calculus based university physics) is recommended for anyone considering Geophysics or Hydrogeology as a possible major.  Note that Math 2720 or 2300 is required for physics 2070/2080.

Baccalaureate Writing requirement is satisfied by GEOL 4320 or GEOL 4350.
