General Course Information

General Information
  • The WMU Hydrogeology Field Course is a series of six one-week modules taught six days per week (Monday through Saturday) with classes beginning at 8:00am.
  • Class will often run into the evening depending upon specific field projects.
  • The course will be conducted on and near the campus of Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI.
  • A final exam will be given at the end of each week.
  • The final grade will be derived from field performance, written assignments, ability to work as a team member, professionalism, and the final exam.
  • Each week counts as 1 semester hour and can be taken for graduate or undergraduate credit.
  • Western Michigan University Department of Geoscience students must take all weeks unless their advisor determines that a week would be redundant given a student's prior experience.
  • The course will emphasize state-of-the-art techniques for sampling, monitoring, and evaluation of ground-water systems. Particular consideration will be given to contaminated systems, aquifer testing, and selected geophysical techniques.
  • Lectures will be minimal and will be given primarily to support field exercises or demonstrations later the same day.
  • Students will gain hands-on field experience using modern field technologies. Demonstration of some modern field equipment will be provided by manufacturer's representatives.
  • In order to provide students with a broad introduction to modern field technologies, numerous items are either donated or loaned to the Hydrogeology Field Course by manufacturers.
  • Note: If you chose not to enroll in Week 1 HAZWOPER training because you already have current HAZWOPER certification, you must fax or mail a copy of your certification (and your most recent update, if applicable) when registering.
