Teaching Assistant Job Descriptions
  • GEOS 1000
    TAs typically carry out the following duties.
    Teach and grade lab sections assigned under the guidance of the laboratory coordinator
    Present materials and concepts related to earth science to introductory students
    Supervise the students' exploration of the topic during the lab
    Answer questions
    Respond to email
    Have weekly office hours
    Help students who miss the lab to makeup the lab
    Oversee test taking
    Grade student performance weekly
    Send teacher of corresponding lecture section a list of all the students in their lab section
    Alert teacher of corresponding lecture section when lab students begin failing
    Send lab final grades to teacher of corresponding lecture section by the first day of finals week
    Assist as scheduled in lecture section with students having clicker problems
    Assist lecture professor as needed: grading problem sets, proctoring exams, showing videos, and/or helping students with disabilities take exams.

 

  • GEOS 1300
    TAs typically teach the weekly labs which consist of two components.
    1. A one-hour computer tutorial. The TA must be available to give directions and answer questions.
    2. A one-hour hands-on exercise. The TA must first explain the exercise and then be available for any additional guidance and to answer student questions.

    The TA must collect and grade the online textbook exercise that is introduced in lecture. TAs are responsible to write and administer a midterm and a final exam, as well as grading all lab exercises and compiling the student's lab grades for the course.
  • GEOS 1310
    The teaching assistant will have primary responsibility for running the laboratory portion of the class in consultation with the instructor. He/she is expected to attend the lecture portion of the class and is responsible for teaching and grading of laboratory exercises and practical exams, providing students with office hours for assistance outside of the scheduled laboratory time, and providing the instructor with a summary grade and overall evaluation of each student in the laboratory sections.

  • GEOS 3350
    Teaching assistants are primarily responsible for running the laboratory section of the class, which includes, but is not limited to: set-up of labs, teaching labs, grading lab assignments, writing and grading lab quizzes and helping students to understand lab and lecture information. They occasionally proctor lecture exams, grade lecture exams and occasionally provide substitute lectures if the instructor is unable to attend lecture.
  • GEOS 4320
    Construct and teach weekly labs in consultation with instructor. Occasional extra grading or showing films when instructor is absent. Accompany class on spring field trip and assist in preparation.
  • GEOS 4350
    TA shall conduct lab sessions with existing lab exercises one day a week during the scheduled Lab class meeting and accompany the class on the annual field trip. The TA shall also grade lab exercises and assist students, outside of regular scheduled class meetings, with Lab and Lecture content material.
  • GEOS 5600
    Teaching Assistants are responsible for teaching labs, grading lab reports, and grading homework exercises from the lectures.
