I joined the faculty in 2004 with a joint appointment in the Department of Geosciences and the Mallinson Institute for Science Education.  My science education research focuses on the preparation and development of K-12 teachers in the earth sciences, with an emphasis on the role of field experience in geoscience education, alternative conceptions in the earth sciences, and teachers’ understanding of the nature of science and scientific inquiry.  My geology research has used a combined field, analytical, and numerical modeling approach to understand how dikes fed lava flows of the Columbia River large igneous province, which include the Earth’s largest lava flows.  I encourage students interested in pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in earth science education to contact me; we currently have support for doctoral students in science education through the Mallinson Institute.
