Elizabeth M. Garrett Endowed Scholarshipfor Women in Science |
The scholarship shall be awarded to a junior, senior, or graduate student who is preparing for a career in science or the teaching of science. Preference shall be given to a non-traditional student. It is required that the recipient shall have and maintain a 3.00 minimum grade point average. The scholarship shall be shared (rotated) between the following departments: Anthropology, Geography, and Geosciences. The award shall be credited in the fall semester of each academic year directly to the recipient’s student account and shall be available for tuition, fees, book expenses, or research projects. The scholarship is renewable for up to a maximum of two (2) consecutive academic years. |
Lauren D. Hughes Environmental ScholarshipThis scholarship was established in the Kalamazoo Community Foundation by the Hughes family to recognize and assist students whose course of study, and intended career, is in the area of water quality. This scholarship was created in the memory of Lauren Hughes, formerly Associate Director of the Western Michigan University GEM (Groundwater Education in Michigan) Regional Center. Applicants should be currently enrolled, Junior-level undergraduates up through Master's level graduate students. Students may be pursuing the study of water quality issues in any academic field (Geosciences, Geography, Biological Science, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, etc.). Applicants must demonstrate interest in water quality issues through prior activities and/or accomplishments. The scholarship is awarded for a one-year period, and is not renewable. The Lauren D. Hughes Scholarship will be awarded in April 2005 (one scholarship of $1,200) at the Geosciences Department banquet. To apply, students should submit college transcripts, a letter summarizing eligibility that outlines the student's goals, interests and accomplishments in water quality. Materials should be sent to Dr. Alan Kehew, Geosciences Department, 1187 Rood Hall, Western Michigan University by March 15, 2005. |
W. David Kuenzi Memorial Geology Fund |
The Department of Geosciences has established this endowment to distribute monies to Graduate and Undergraduate Geology students. Student requirements shall be decided and posted at a later date. |
Lloyd Schmaltz Endowment Fund |
The Department of Geosciences has established this fund to be used at the Chair's discretion. |
Future Endowments |
Envirologic Technologies Endowed Scholarship |
This scholarship is being established by Envirologic Technologies, Inc. of Kalamazoo, MI to be awarded in Fall 2010. The scholarship shall be awarded to a full-time undergraduate and/or graduate student pursuing studies in the Department of Geosciences. First preference will be given to U.S. citizens with a demonstrated financial need with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. One scholarship shall be awarded annually with one-half of the award given in the fall semester and one-half in the spring semester. The scholarship is renewable provided the recipient remains a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in the Department of Geosciences and has demonstrated satisfactory academic progress. |
W. Richard Laton Field Camp Endowment |
W. Richard Laton is establishing this endowment to be used to support scholarships and buy equipment/supplies for Western Michigan University's Hydrogeology Field Course. Half of the endowment's spendable dollars will be used for undergraduate or graduate scholarships for students enrolled in the Field Course, and the remaining half shall be used to purchase equipment and supplies for the Hydrogeology Field Course. One scholarship will be awarded annually beginning Fall 2010 and will be credited directly to the recipient's student account to be used for tuition and fees. |
American Federation of Mineralogical Societies
Scholarship Foundation
The American Federation of Mineralogical Societies created a Scholarship Foundation to administer a fund meant to give grants to Graduate students involved in Earth Science subjects. The Foundation gives monies to each Federation: California, Eastern, Midwest, Northwest, Rocky Mountain, and South Central to distribute. Students are nominated by the Department. Awards are in the amount of $2000 and are given to two students for two consecutive years. Grants were awarded to WMU, Department of Geosciences students for Fall 2006.
